Dermabrasion - Non-Surgical: Leif Rogers, MD

Overview:

Being our body’s first line of defense, the skin is left to face the harsh effects of the elements, including ultraviolet rays and pollution. These harsh effects can cause the skin to look aged and rough. A dermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure that can improve the appearance of the skin. It can be performed to reduce mild acne scaring and hyperpigmentation as well as to improve the appearance of fine lines and large pores. A medium depth treatment can minimize the appearance of some dark discoloration, pregnancy masking, age spots, and rough skin. Dermabrasion is most commonly performed on the face, but can also be used to treat other areas of the skin.

Science:

A dermabrasion treatment causes controlled injury to the skin’s damaged superficial cells. It can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to complete depending on the size of the area being treated. A high-powered rotor with an abrasive brush or wheel is used to sand off the surface layer of the skin. During the procedure, only small areas of the skin can be treated at a time. The high-powered rotor breaks up dead skin and other skin impurities leaving an open wound. The wound then heals with new skin that is fresher and more vibrant.
