CO2 - Non-Surgical: Leif Rogers, MD

We all wish we had flawless skin or at least could remove some of our flaws on our skin. The most common application for CO2 is for removal of fine lines, especially around the eyes and mouth, but the procedure can be used on the whole face to improve minor facial flaws, such as wrinkles on the forehead, scars from acne or chickenpox, non-responsive skin after a facelift, aged or sun-damaged skin, liver spots, warts, birthmarks, enlarged oil glands or to improve yellow or gray tones in the skin.

The Science:

The CO2 laser works by removing areas of damaged or wrinkled skin layer by layer. A carbon-dioxide laser is used to send short, concentrated pulsating beams of light to remove the outer layer skin, called the epidermis. It simultaneously heats the underlying skin, called the dermis. This action works to stimulate growth of new collagen. As the treated area heals, the new skin that forms is smoother and firmer. This targeted approach means there are fewer problems with hypopigmentation, or a lightening of skin.
